Pagāja laiks. Valentīnai sāka rasties galvā domas, ka Nikolajs ilgi nevēlēsies būt bez bērniem. Viņš viņu pametīs un atradīs tādu, kura var laist pasaulē savus bērnus. Viņa baidījās palikt viena. Cik ļoti viņa kļūdījās, jo vīrs nebeidza viņu mīlēt un visas domas bija tikai par viņu.

“Kur ir tavi vecāki?,” Vaļa jautāja. Meitene izrādījās viena. Viņa atbildēja, ka viņas māte ir aizgājusi mūžībā, un tēvs ilgu laiku nav rādījies. Viņa teica, ka dzīvo pie vecmāmiņas un vecmāmiņa viņu stipri lamās par saplēsto kleitu.
Valentīnai ar grūtībām izdevās meiteni nomierināt. Viņa aizveda viņu veikalu, lai nopirktu viņai drēbes. Vēlāk nopirka viņai arī ēdienu.
”Vedīsim tevi tagad mājās”,- Vaļa teica.

“Ko jūs no viņas gribat. Viņa ir bārene. Meitenes tēvs ir mans brāļadēls. Sen nav šeit parādījies,” nomurmināja tievā vecene.
“Katjai nepieciešama aprūpe. Viņa bija izsalkusi un netīra,” – ar sūdzībām Valja vērsās pie vecmāmiņas.
Atbildot uz to, vecā sieviete pavēlēja: “Tu esi jauna, kā tu uzdrošinies mani vēl mācīt? Ej ārā no manas mājas.
Valija jutās ievainota. “Es sūdzēšos atbildīgajām iestādēm. Par meiteni nerūpējas. Viņa ir tik pat kā bārene!” Viņa teica.
Vecmāmiņa Zoja ar smaidu sacīja: “Nu, labi. Ātrāk viņu prom aizvedīs. Man bez viņas ir pietiekami daudz rūpju.”
Dienu un nakti Valija nebeidza domāt par bērnu. Viņa pastāstīja vīram par visu situāciju: “Atvedīsim viņu pie mums? Mēs viņu adoptēsim.”
Nikolajs, mierinot viņu, ar aizvainojumu teica: “Mēs nevarēsim viņu adoptēt. Viņai ir radi.”
Valija nevarēja beigt domāt par Katju. Kad viņas vīrs devās ceļojumā, Valija devās pie vecās sievietes.
“Ko tev vajag? Atnāca viņas pašas tēvs un paņēma viņu,” rupji sacīja vecmāmiņa Zoja.
Atgriežoties mājās no komandējuma, vēlu vakarā Nikolajs apstājās vakariņās kafejnīcā. Tur viņš redzēja meiteni aiz loga. Viņa bija tērpusies netīrās drēbēs. Viņš nopirka viņai saldumus.
Kāds klients viņam teica: “Viņa ilgu laiku ir viena un bez uzraudzības. Kā zināms, patēvs aizgāja mūžībā negadījumā, un pamāte nepievērš uzmanību un rūpes.”

Pēc sarunas ar pamāti Kolja aizveda meitenīti pie sevis. Viņš nezināja, kā informēt Valiju par to. Viņš uztraucās par viņas reakciju.
Tuvojoties mājai, Valija steidzās satikt savu vīru. Bet nez kāpēc viņa apstājās un pēkšņi iekliedzās: “Katja, mana Katja, Katja!”
